How Does Instagram AutoDM Work?

At its simplest, Instagram AutoDM is a pipeline: content creates intent, a comment expresses that intent, and a configured workflow sends the matching Direct Message.

The six-step workflow

1. Content - a creator publishes an Instagram post or Reel
   ↓
2. Comment - a viewer comments a predefined keyword
   ↓
3. Trigger - the AutoDM system identifies the qualifying comment
   ↓
4. Response - the configured workflow determines what should be sent
   ↓
5. Direct Message - the viewer receives the relevant response privately
   ↓
6. Action - the viewer can open the product, guide, booking link, PDF or other resource

Example

A fashion creator posts a Reel featuring an outfit. The caption says:

Comment LINK and I'll send you the products.

A viewer comments LINK. The AutoDM workflow sends the configured product recommendation in DM. A public comment becomes a private, useful interaction.

What the system needs

• A connected Instagram account through a supported login flow
• A keyword or set of keywords
• A response: product cards, a link, a PDF, a booking page, or another resource
• The workflow enabled on the relevant Reel or post

Tools that use official Meta/Instagram APIs receive the comment event from Instagram, match it against the creator's setup, and send the DM through the messaging API. That is different from unofficial bots that scrape comments or ask for an Instagram password.
